Gender (HIV/AIDS) - Afod cross cutting program

The goal of AFOD’s HIV/AIDS unit is to strengthen local institutions and structures’ capacity to fight HIV/AIDS scourge through providing user-friendly PMTCT, Voluntary counselling & testing and HIV/AIDS education. AFOD collaborates with local CBOs, NGOs, INGO and UN Agencies to mainstream HIVAIDS in all sectors and provide comprehensive care, treatment, referral and support services to infected and affected.

AFOD intends to start its first HIV project in Awerial, Bor, and Greater Bhar el Ghazal states. It is mobilizing resources and will operate in partnership with other Community Based organizations, faith-based and non-governmental organizations to response to HIV/AIDS scourge and support people affected by the epidemic in South Sudan.

The HIV/AIDS programme will support and implement interventions in the areas of: 1). Treatment and care, 2). Home based Care and support, 3). Support for Orphans and vulnerable children and 4). Prevention and behaviour change, that may eventually result into; reducing transmission of HIV among young people and in general population at risk etc; elimination of new infections among Children; increasing access to treatment for PLHIV and HIV/AIDS education and promotion of safer behaviour.

Treatment and ART management: This component will focus on clinical assessment, medical treatment and ART management for people infected with HIV/AIDS. Capacity building trainings will be supported to enhance knowledge of service providers while the Home-based care and support for orphans & vulnerable children; will address psychosocial support activities, palliative care, adherence, family support, nutrition, referral and support for children affected by HIV in South Sudan respectively. Our HIV/AIDS wing support will prioritise the people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWA) to reduce morbidity and mortality. Finally, prevention and behaviour change is our critical intervention in this department. It focuses on; Awareness and knowledge improvement of the general population to be able understand the facts about HIV/AIDS, risk behaviours, life skills trainings, behaviour change communication, Prevention of Mother-to-Child transmission, Information Education and Communication and HIV counselling and testing.

In emergency or conflict situations, AFOD offers a full package of HIV/AIDS response supporting key interventions ranging from; Information, education and communication, Voluntary Counselling & Testing services, treatment and care, referral, follow up and Nutrition support for people leaving with HIV/ADS. We work hand-in-hand with other NGOs partners and Government to provide other services that are not implemented by AFOD.
